Dental Bridges

3D rendering of a dental bridge being placed over a missing tooth gap that is flanked by two shaved down teethA dental bridge is a long-term solution for replacing lost teeth in the mouth. A dental bridge is custom-made for each patient and resembles a natural tooth in appearance and function. When multiple bridges are necessary for the mouth, a full-mouth restoration is required; in the case of several missing teeth, dentures may be recommended. Our team at Cornell Dental will help you choose the best dental bridge for your needs.

Different Variations of Dental Bridges

When an individual has lost teeth as a consequence of an accident, an ineffective root canal, or tooth root, a dental bridge is required. If you have implants or preexisting oral crowns on the abutment teeth, a dental bridge is likely to be prescribed. There are four main types of dental bridges which include a traditional bridge, a cantilever bridge, Maryland Bridge, and an implant-supported bridge.

Traditional Dental Bridge

The most frequent type of bridge is the traditional bridge, which is made of porcelain fused metal, ceramic, or any metal. They have a crown on each side that holds a synthetic tooth in place. During this treatment, the dentist files and shapes two teeth adjacent to the pontic tooth to ensure that the crowns fit perfectly. These bridges are tough and durable if correctly managed.

Cantilever Dental Bridge

Cantilever bridges are made of porcelain fused to metal, however, they require one natural tooth to support them. These bridges substitute front teeth and are not as strong as traditional bridges because they use a dental crown or a prosthetic tooth on the broken tooth, with a bridge on each side.

Maryland Dental Bridge

Maryland bridges, sometimes known as adhesive bridges, are supported by a metal framework. They're made of porcelain and have wings to keep them balanced. Adhesive bridges are not as strong as cantilever bridges and are used to reconstruct incisors.

Implant-Supported Dental Bridge

Finally, implant-supported bridges are utilized to replace teeth, especially when three teeth are lost in a row. They are supported by dental implants. Moreover, they are considered the toughest and most stable.

Advantages of Bridges

To begin with, the process of installing dental bridges is fast and does not call for invasive surgery, apart from implant-supported bridges. Furthermore, the time it takes to heal from the procedure is less. Finally, dental bridges are affordable, hence you can easily acquire them.

Caring for Dental Bridges

Care for bridges includes basic oral hygiene, similar to how your would care for your natural teeth or dental crowns. The pontic tooth requires special attention because cleaning the area where it rests is difficult, allowing plaque to build up. As a result, flossing between teeth, brushing regularly, and rinsing with mouthwash are all crucial.

Over-the-counter medication or a visit to Cornell Dental are usually prescribed in situations of discomfort. It's also important to keep track of what you eat. Candies, hard foods, and ice cubes are examples of items that should be avoided. Please contact us at (971) 397-6196 if you have any inquiries about dental bridges.
