Tips for Preventing Sports-Related Dental Injuries

Posted on 11/1/2024 by Cornell Dental
Patients playing football before appointment at Cornell Dental in Hillsboro, ORPlaying sports is a great way to stay healthy and have fun. However, it's important to be aware of the risk of dental injuries, which can occur in a variety of ways. According to the American Dental Association, an estimated 5 million teeth are knocked out each year due to sports injuries. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help prevent these injuries.

Wear a Mouthguard

The most important thing you can do to prevent a sports-related dental injury is to wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards are soft, plastic protectors that fit over your teeth and gums. They act as a cushion between your teeth and your lips, tongue, and cheeks, helping to absorb the impact of a blow to the mouth.

There are two types of mouthguards: stock and custom-fitted. Stock mouthguards are available over-the-counter at most sporting goods stores. They are inexpensive and easy to find, but they may not fit well and can be bulky and uncomfortable. Custom-fitted mouthguards are made by a dentist to fit your mouth exactly. They are more expensive than stock mouthguards, but they are more comfortable and provide better protection.

Other Preventive Measures

In addition to wearing a mouthguard, there are several other things you can do to help prevent sports-related dental injuries:

•  Use good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy, making them less likely to be injured.
•  See your dentist regularly. Your dentist can check for any potential problems with your teeth and gums and can recommend ways to protect your teeth from injury.
•  Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help to keep your mouth moist, which can help to prevent your teeth from being chipped or broken.
•  Avoid sugary drinks. Sugary drinks can contribute to tooth decay, which can make your teeth more susceptible to injury.
•  Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to where you are playing and be careful not to run into anything that could injure your mouth.

What to Do If You Do Get a Dental Injury

If you do get a dental injury, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. The dentist will be able to assess the damage and recommend the best course of treatment. If you have a knocked-out tooth, it is important to try to find it and keep it moist. If it is possible, try to put the tooth back in its socket. If not, place the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva and take it to the dentist right away.

By following these tips, you can help to prevent sports-related dental injuries and keep your smile healthy and strong.
