While canker sores can be extremely painful, they are treatable, and you can do a lot to help them heal. Here is additional information about canker sores and how you can banish that pain and begin to heal.

What Is a Canker Sore?

The term canker sore is another name for a mouth ulcer. Canker sores can appear in your mouth at any time during your life, but they are most common in women as well as in teenagers or young adults. Canker sores are bright red with a white, flat center. You can get canker sores anywhere in your mouth, but they are most common on the inside of your cheeks and on the inside of your mouth below the lip.

Is There More Than One Type of Canker Sore?

You can classify your canker sore into one of two types. Minor canker sores are sores that are less than half an inch in size. If you have a large canker sore, half an inch in diameter or larger, this is called a major canker sore. Major canker sores can be up to two inches in diameter or larger, which could cause you a lot of pain and discomfort.

Canker Sore Treatment

If you have a minor canker sore, you should be able to treat it at home. You can help your canker sore heal by rinsing your mouth three times a day with a solution of salt and water. If your canker sore is painful, there are over-the-counter creams or pastes you can put directly onto the sore to speed up healing and dull the pain.

If your canker sore is large and will not go away with over-the-counter treatment, it is time to come and see our dentist. Our dentist has options to help you feel better soon. Why not give us a call today to make an appointment?
