3 Common Causes of Tooth Loss

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Cornell Dental
3 Common Causes of Tooth LossNatural teeth offer aesthetic and functional benefits. They improve one's confidence to smile in public and enhance eating and speaking. They also prevent oral issues such as jaw bone loss. Unfortunately, tooth loss is common globally. While tooth loss is a rite of passage into adulthood, losing one or multiple teeth in your adult life can be distressing. Read on and learn three common causes of tooth loss:

Poor Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene contributes to dental issues. Even ignoring simple practices such as brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup. Over time, the plaque bacteria release acid that eats away the tooth enamel. Damaged tooth enamel is an early sign of cavities, and if left untreated, it can progress and cause tooth loss.

In addition, untreated plaque can extend under the gum line and cause symptoms such as inflammation and bleeding. In severe cases, infections may occur and affect the bone supporting the teeth. When this happens, your teeth will likely become loose and fall out.

Mouth Trauma

Playing contact sports, accidents, and outdoor activities can cause tooth loss. The tooth may get knocked out during these incidences, but sometimes tooth loss may not happen immediately after an injury. Damage can happen to the tooth's roots where you cannot see. Over time, infections may occur and affect the supporting tissues, causing tooth loss.

Missing Teeth

Gapped teeth cause the remaining teeth to shift, leading to misalignments. When you have crooked teeth, brushing may become challenging, and you may experience tooth decay and gum disease. These oral issues are among the reasons for tooth loss.

In addition, gaps between the teeth make you put pressure on the remaining teeth, increasing the risk of tooth fractures. Chips and cracks allow bacteria to enter the tooth, leading to infections.
